Adrienne Dell on Capital Punishment

May 23, 2012

As a member of Death Penalty Focus, I share their mission of ending capital punishment in the United States through education, research, political advocacy, and media outreach. We believe that once the public becomes aware of the human and financial costs connected with the death penalty, the United States will abolish capital punishment and join the majority of countries around the world in banning this ineffective, discriminatory practice. Here are just a few of the reasons we believe the death penalty should be abolished:
• Executions cost taxpayers more than do life sentences without parole
• Scientific studies have failed to show that capital punishment prevents more crime than long sentences
• Evidence shows that innocent people have been executed
• Race, both of the defendant and of the victim, has been shown to impact the likelihood of receiving a death sentence
• The facts of a crime play less of a role in determining a death penalty case than do politics, quality of legal counsel, and jurisdiction
• Money spent on capital punishment could instead be used to help grieving families through counseling and restitution
